What happens to a joint bank account when one party dies?

All joint bank accounts belong to both parties. Therefore, the bank should be notified if one of the account holders passes away.

The bank will then require either the original or a certified copy of the death certificate.

Where the remaining party is the spouse the account will remain unblocked.

However for all other relationships, the account will be blocked until the document is received. This is obviously worth knowing for couples who manage their finances jointly but who are not legally married.
